What Is A Responsive Website?

A responsive website will adapt to the device it is being viewed on. On a desktop computer it will fill the screen and enlarge everything so that it is easily viewable.

On a smaller device such as a phone, the content of your website will become smaller, and some features will be changed so that your site looks good on all types of devices.

For example, this animation will show text wrapping to the left but on a mobile device the animation and text will be stacked so that it still looks good on a smaller device such as a phone.

The animation above shows how a website should adapt to display properly on different screen sizes. It shows a wide desktop, a small desktop, a wide tablet, a smaller tablet, and a phone. A responsive site will also “flip” when a phone or tablet changes orientation.

Why Is This Important?

Why should your website be responsive? To start with, it avoids potential frustration when your clients/customers look at your site. You may have seen sites where there is a scroll bar so that you have to keep scrolling over to see the entire width of the page, or worse, the website where everything is cut off. If there is text wrapping around a picture there can be issues where words are split in order to show beside the picture.

Another important reason to make your site responsive is to improve your search engine optimization (SEO). Google is constantly changing their algorithms that get your site listed at the top of searches when someone Googles a product or service you have to offer.

One of the more recent changes that Google has made is to penalize a website’s ranking if it is not responsive to mobile devices. The last thing you want is for your listing to be lower than it would be just because your site is not responsive.
